Torulosis

Torulosis - see Cryptococcosis.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease caused by the yeast-like fungi Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii. These fungi are widespread in the environment and can enter the human body through the respiratory tract. The disease most often affects the lungs, as well as the central nervous system. The main symptoms of cryptococcosis are cough, fever, headache, nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis is based on detection of cryptococcal antigens and culture. Treatment includes the use of antifungal drugs such as fluconazole and amphotericin B. Cryptococcosis can cause meningitis and meningoencephalitis, especially in people with weakened immune systems. The prognosis depends on the timeliness of diagnosis and the adequacy of therapy.
