The eyelids serve an important function by keeping the eyes moist with tears, protecting them from damage, and protecting them from light and pollution. To cope with these tasks, the eye blinks up to 24,000 times a day. Therefore, the delicate skin of the eye area is subjected to more intense stress than the rest of the skin.
The skin around the eyes is very thin, while the rest of the facial skin is four times thicker. Underneath there is almost no subcutaneous fat, few sebaceous and sweat glands, as well as supporting fibers such as elastin and collagen. This is where wrinkles, crow's feet and other signs of aging first appear. During the night, fluid in the body accumulates under the skin, stretching it, and this can cause puffiness under the eyes.
