Xylobene: description of the drug and its use

Xylobene is a drug used to treat upper respiratory tract diseases such as acute allergic rhinitis, hay fever, sinusitis and otitis media. It can also be used to prepare patients for diagnostic procedures in the nasal passages. Xylobene belongs to the pharmaceutical group of drugs that stimulate alpha and beta adrenergic receptors.

The drug is manufactured by Merkle GmbH in Germany. Its international name is Xylometazoline. Xylobene is also known under such synonyms as Brizolin, Galazolin, Grippostad Rino, Dlynos, Doctor Theiss Nazolin, Xylene, Xylometazoline, Xymelin, Nasal aerosol, Nazenspray E-ratiopharm, Nazenspray K-ratiopharm, Olint, Otrivin, Rinonorm, Rinostop, Tizin xylo and Farmazolin.

Xylobene is available in two dosage forms: 5 mg nasal spray and 10 mg nasal spray. The active substance of the drug is xylometazoline.

When using Xylobene, side effects may occur, such as mucosal irritation, burning, tingling, sneezing, dryness and hypersecretion. Rare side effects include swelling of the nasal mucosa, palpitations, irregular heart rhythm, increased blood pressure, headache, vomiting, sleep disturbance and vision disturbances. With long-term use of high doses of the drug, symptoms of depression may occur.

Xylobene is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy and breastfeeding. The drug is also incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

In case of an overdose of Xylobene, side effects may increase. Treatment for overdose is symptomatic.

Despite its effectiveness in treating upper respiratory tract diseases, Xylobene should not be used for long periods of time, such as for chronic rhinitis. An aerosol of the drug can be used in children under 3 years of age, and nasal drops with a concentration of the active substance of 1 mg/ml for children under 2 years of age should only be prescribed by a doctor. For colds, it is recommended to use Xylobene for no more than 5-7 days, and for allergic rhinitis - no more than 14 days.

Before using Xylobene, you should consult your doctor and strictly follow the dosage and recommendations for use. The drug may interact with other medications, so you must tell your doctor about all medications you are taking.

In general, Xylobene is an effective drug for the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract, but its use should be limited and under the supervision of a physician.
