Zinc Test

Zinc test (zinc sulfate test) is one of the methods for determining the presence of glucose in the blood. It is based on the reaction of glucose with zinc and sodium sulfate in the presence of iron (III) chloride. When glucose is present in the blood, gluconic acid is formed, which reacts with zinc to form a yellow-orange precipitate. This precipitate can be easily detected visually or using special reagents.

To carry out the test, you need to take a blood sample from a finger or vein, add zinc, sodium sulfate and iron (III) chloride to it in certain proportions. Then the mixture is thoroughly mixed and left for 10-15 minutes until a yellow or orange precipitate appears. If a precipitate is present, this indicates the presence of glucose in the blood and indicates its elevated level.

The zinc test is a simple and affordable method for determining blood glucose at home without the use of special equipment. However, like any other diagnostic method, it is not 100% accurate, and its results can be distorted if performed incorrectly or if reagents are used incorrectly. Therefore, it is recommended to use this method only as an additional method for determining blood glucose, and not as the main diagnostic method.

In addition, zinc has the ability to absorb UV rays, which makes it an ideal material for performing the Kunkel test.
