Double Vision

Double vision, also known as diplopia, is a vision disorder in which a person sees double or blurry images of one object. This occurs due to problems with coordinating eye movements or focusing both eyes on an object.

Causes of double vision include:

  1. Strabismus is incoordination of eye movements due to weakness of the eye muscles.

  2. Focusing problems - cataracts, astigmatism, farsightedness or nearsightedness.

  3. Damage to the optic nerve or brain - stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury.

  4. Diseases - myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes.

Treatment depends on the cause. This may include glasses, laser vision correction, eye exercises, prisms, surgery or medications. If double vision appears suddenly, you should immediately consult a doctor, as this may be a sign of a serious illness.
