Men's skin is completely different from women's. On the one hand, it is rougher and thicker. On the other hand, it is more susceptible to irritation and rashes, as it is constantly injured as a result of shaving. All these features were studied by modern laboratories, and based on their research, men's cosmetics for facial skin were born with all its nuances, advantages and disadvantages. What are they?

  1. Men's cosmetics have a lighter texture than women's, which ensures rapid absorption.
  2. It is more concentrated in terms of active ingredients, because they have to overcome the dense and rough barrier of male skin.
  3. Men's cosmetics are represented by such products as cleansing gels and lotions; moisturizing compounds; anti-aging serums, creams, emulsions; shaving products; concentrates for the area around the eyes.
  4. Recently, much more natural ingredients have begun to be used in men's cosmetics. Salts, parabens, sulfates, alcohols and other harmful substances in their composition are a thing of the past.
  5. Like women's cosmetics, men's cosmetics are marked with age (+30, +35, +40, etc.).
  6. There is a division according to skin type: dry, oily and normal.
  7. Most products have a neutral, unobtrusive aroma. It may be completely absent, because men rarely like strong odors.

Now you see for yourself that men's facial care cosmetics are different from women's, although they require no less attention.

It’s time for representatives of the stronger half of humanity to think about the fact that age-related changes will someday affect their epidermis, and the frantic pace of modern life and the unfavorable environmental situation only hasten the onset of aging. And if you don’t take care of your skin with cosmetics in advance, then it will be too late to do anything. Therefore, it is worth learning how to use it.

And if representatives of the stronger half of humanity pay enough attention to these products, manufacturers will certainly expand their product lines for them. But first you need to learn how to use this wealth.

  1. You should choose cosmetics according to your age.
  2. It is necessary to apply facial care products daily.
  3. Expired products cause allergic reactions and numerous irritations, so you need to monitor their expiration date.
  4. Cosmetics are applied to the skin in small quantities.
  5. Before using it, you must wash your hands. Basic hygiene rules protect the epidermis from pathogenic microbes and inflammation.

As you can see, there is nothing special about using various men's facial cosmetics. Everyone will be able to master and apply these simple rules in practice. Well, our task now is to help men navigate the variety of products presented on the modern market.

This is interesting. Men's skin has one significant drawback - it has a lot of sebaceous glands. That is why in adolescence, boys suffer from acne and acne much more often than girls. And even at a later age this trend continues.

Today, almost every major cosmetic brand offers special cosmetics for men. How is it different from women's? And is it really as necessary for men as its manufacturers tell us?

Find out with our expert Tatyana Puchkova, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Chairman of the Russian Perfume and Cosmetic Association.

In numbers and facts

Shaving and aftershave products, lotions and tonics, eye creams, for the face, against wrinkles and swelling, for protection and moisturizing... The shelves of modern stores are literally bursting with men's cosmetics. And if these products are produced, does that mean anyone needs them? And can we finally rejoice for the strong half of humanity, which reveals the benefits of civilization so close to a woman’s heart? In fact, everything is not so simple.

At the same time, interest in men's cosmetics is constantly heating up. Cosmetics companies are looking for new sales opportunities. And although they often wishful thinking, they still find a way to a man’s heart.

Among the population of large cities today there are more and more men aged just over 30 who love, pamper and cherish themselves. They are the ones who begin to look for men’s cosmetics and actively use them. The sector is growing primarily due to them.

Since eternal youth is the main trend of modern society, and metrosexuals do not want to grow old, the market is increasing due to anti-aging products - more expensive and sophisticated. Quite young people are also interested in trying something new. The older generation, as a rule, is suspicious of such means. At best, men by age 50 and beyond can be introduced to deodorants and, sometimes, manicures.

An important component of market growth is the development of new regions. Involving residents of Southeast Asia and Africa in the process of purchasing cosmetics significantly increases this segment.

The tradition of caring for the face, body, beard, and the habit of massage, common among wealthy men, encourages them to actively use new products. Another eastern innovation is decorative cosmetics for men, and we are talking about men of traditional sexual orientation. But so far, on a general scale, the market segment is very small.

Therefore, brands spend a lot of money and effort to bring their offers to the male consciousness. And for this they are trying to combine them with some traditional male values. “Fly as a man and return as a hero” is one of the rather successful examples of such promotion. But still, the decisive role in choosing cosmetics for men remains with girlfriends and wives. Most often, they are the ones who decide which cosmetic products will end up on the bathroom shelf.

Manufacturers assure that each of them has its own “male” specifics, takes into account the characteristics of male skin, male preferences, and even contains special ingredients or their concentration that are more suitable for men. Let's figure out if this is really so.

Before and after shaving products

Special products before, for and after shaving are a group of men's cosmetics whose necessity is beyond doubt. Men's skin is considered oilier and thicker, says Tatyana Puchkova. – In men, with rare exceptions, we do not encounter problems with thin, dry, aging skin, characteristic of the weaker half of humanity. Despite the fact that many men experience skin irritation in the shaving area, it is still characterized by a large amount of sebum. Therefore, the raw material base of such men's cosmetics is shifted towards those ingredients that are used for normal, combination or oily skin. In addition, they necessarily include bactericidal, healing and soothing components. In the choice of such cosmetics for men, there is a certain change in preferences. Alcohol products after shaving have begun to give way to moisturizing products with active substances that relieve irritation. While alcohol perfectly disinfects wounds in the shaving area, it irritates other areas of the skin. And people who work in offices, as a rule, already suffer from dry skin and poor nutrition. Alcohol in such products only exacerbates these problems.

In the high price category of shaving products, such delicacies as shaving with a brush and special aftershave colognes are being revived.

In fact, making good men's cosmetics after shaving is not so easy, notes Tatyana Puchkova. – We need to take into account quite a lot of different factors: men shave differently, have different thickness and density of stubble, even the water with which we wash ourselves is also different. Therefore, mainly large companies with established recipes and offers work with pre- and after-shave cosmetics.

Hygiene products

These include shower gels and men's shampoos. In men's shampoos, according to Tatyana Puchkova, a little more cleansing components are added, and both groups are characterized by specific masculine aromas. But overall these are very similar products.

Anti-aging cosmetics

Male and female skin have the same anatomical structure and age according to the same physiological laws (we are not talking about the difference in the rates and manifestations of aging, which we wrote about in the previous article). Therefore, there is, by and large, no need to create special anti-aging men's cosmetics. The active components (vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, moisturizers) in women's and men's creams are, in principle, almost the same, but can be introduced in different proportions.

The main difference between anti-aging men's cosmetics and women's is that it takes into account certain male preferences. In terms of composition, it is usually lighter, and since men absolutely cannot stand the feeling of stickiness, it has a gel base and is sure to be quickly absorbed. Even eye cream for men is lighter and contains less oils: apply it and go to work. And, of course, men's creams have a special masculine aroma.

“Today, in the assortment of some brands you can find large lines of cosmetics for men,” says Tatyana Puchkova. — In my opinion, creating such a number of products for men is pointless, unless the goal is the long-term prospect of densely occupying the men's market niche. It seems that companies are simply testing the market, given this opportunity. Men, with rare exceptions, are not able to choose their own cosmetics. If you ask men what they really need, they will name moisturizers that they are willing to replace aftershave cream with. Cream for puffiness and bags under the eyes. Men also love masks - for some reason, using them seems more masculine to them than simply applying cream. And these wishes are worth listening to.

Cosmetics for teenagers

During puberty, under the influence of testosterone production, boys often experience acne. Cosmetics for problem skin, which includes cleansing, disinfecting and reducing sebum (sebum) production, help to cope with it. Today, such cosmetics are not divided into men's and women's. And boys who are taught to take care of their skin are quite willing to use both simple and complex products.

No matter how much we, women, rejoice at the introduction of men to cosmetic civilization, the vast majority still consider toothpaste, deodorant and foot cream to be necessary products. All other addictions are formed under the influence of the environment: first of all - wives and girlfriends, and secondly - advertising. And here it is important not to “break” male nature” and take into account the male desire to make do with minimal means. Even if there is a legitimate desire to have a well-groomed, fit companion nearby, he must still remain a man.

If your boyfriend secretly uses your face cream, hint to him that there are plenty of cosmetics for men these days. All that remains is to choose the appropriate tools and learn how to use them. And yes, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one cream.

Features of men's cosmetics

Taking offense at men, we often call them thick-skinned. And for good reason: their facial skin is indeed thicker than women’s, and the collagen of the dermis is denser. Here the male population is lucky - their skin ages more slowly.

In general, representatives of the stronger sex require special care. A whole range of ingredients is welcome in cosmetics for men.

Plant extracts (chamomile, cornflower, aloe, witch hazel), vitamin E soothe and relieve irritation.

Salicylic or other acids are dried and the stratum corneum of the epidermis is exfoliated.

Antioxidants such as retinol and sesaline (sesame extract) increase protective properties.

Allantoin, shea butter, panthenol restore and soften damaged skin.

Vitamin C and peptides stimulate the production of collagen and elastin and prevent the appearance of wrinkles.

Types of cosmetics

What should the minimum arsenal of men's cosmetics include?

Shower gel

The pH level of men's skin is slightly lower than women's, so more alkaline cleansers are required (but not soap, which irritates and dries the skin). The gel is needed specifically from the line for men; they can be recognized by the marking for men, pour homme. In addition to cleansing agents, the composition should contain components that:

Shaving foam

It is good if it contains softening, moisturizing and disinfecting components.

Aftershave gel

Cosmetologists categorically condemn the habit of men after shaving to wipe their faces with cologne or eau de toilette. This is a bad idea, because alcohol only dries and irritates the skin.

Shaving is a traumatic procedure for the skin, after which soothing, softening, moisturizing products with extracts of chamomile, witch hazel and panthenol will be useful.

Facial fluid

It is fluid or gel. Thick cream is less comfortable for men's skin, as it is prone to oiliness. Yes, and a thicker product is absorbed worse.
Choose a fluid based on your skin type and age, preferably one with a moisturizing effect and SPF.

Eye cream (after 35 years)

The texture should be light; hyaluronic acid, plant extracts, and avocado oil are welcome in the composition. It is better to apply in the morning; evening use can cause swelling after sleep.
