Peroneal (or Gamato) type muscular atrophy is a complex hereditary disorder that is characterized by specific disorders of muscle tissue, as well as structural changes in the nervous system. It is a rare disease and remains one of the most poorly understood in neurology to date, despite having been around for over two hundred years. Therefore, doctors are not always able to establish the cause of the disease and determine its characteristics.
Symptoms of the muscle type abnormality gradually worsen and may affect the face, limbs, or other parts of the body. In addition to physical defects, peroneal muscular atrophy also affects a person’s mood and emotional background. The bulk of research, including genetic and clinical studies from the 18th century, has shown no contact with perneal muscle tissue layers (the muscles surrounding the internal genital organs, such as the vagina) or possible problems in this region. In some cases, doctors suggest that the common symptoms of perneal muscle atrophy may be due to inadequate development of this internal connection or general muscle weakness.
