Azithromycin: description, indications for use, contraindications and side effects

Azithromycin is an antibiotic belonging to the group of macrolides and azalides. It is widely used to treat various infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, urethritis, cervicitis, erysipelas, impetigo and Lyme disease.

Azithromycin is produced in Russia by Vertex and ZiO-Zdorovye, in Georgia by Pharmimpex, and in Spain by Chemo Iberica. It is available in the form of capsules containing 250 mg of the active substance - azithromycin.

Contraindications to the use of azithromycin include hypersensitivity to macrolides, severe liver dysfunction, pregnancy and lactation. Precautions should also be taken when using azithromycin in patients with severe impairment of liver function, kidney function and cardiac arrhythmias.

Various side effects may occur when using azithromycin, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, diarrhea, melena, cholestatic jaundice, chest pain, palpitations, weakness, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, nephritis, vaginitis, candidiasis , neutropenia or neutrophilia, pseudomembranous colitis, photosensitivity, rash, angioedema, eosinophilia. Children may experience additional side effects such as hyperkinesia, agitation, nervousness, insomnia and conjunctivitis.

Interaction of azithromycin with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium hydroxide may reduce absorption and maximum concentration of the drug.

Although there is no evidence of azithromycin overdose yet, recommended doses should not be exceeded.

After discontinuation of treatment, some patients may retain hypersensitivity reactions, which require specific therapy under medical supervision.

Thus, azithromycin is an effective antibiotic for treating various infections caused by bacteria. However, its use should be under the supervision of a physician, taking into account possible side effects and contraindications.
