Bicuspid Valve

Bicuspid valve or Bicuspid valve is a type of mitral valve that has two leaflets instead of three as in a normal mitral valve. This valve is found in people with congenital heart defects such as patent atrioventricular canal or bicuspid aortic valve.

The bicuspid valve differs from the mitral valve in that it has two leaflets, not three, and is located in the left atrioventricular orifice. This causes blood from the left atrium to flow into the left ventricle through a narrow channel, which can cause problems with cardiac output.

Treatment for bicuspid valve may include surgery to increase blood flow through the valve, placement of an artificial valve, or the use of medications to improve heart function.

The bicuspid valve is largely inherited from the mitral valve, but during the process of evolutionary development its structure has changed slightly. The two fingers that make up the valves (a powerful, durable bridge adjacent to the coronary sinus) have formed widened angles of the valve that close asymmetrically. Thus, the interatrial septum in the area of ​​the bicuspid valve is slightly enlarged, which is a characteristic feature of this anatomical structure. This is often referred to as a secondary valve type.
