Marburg disease is an infectious disease caused by the Marburg virus, which belongs to the filovirus family of viruses. It is most often found in Africa and Western Asia, but can spread to more remote areas throughout the world.
The disease was originally identified in forest gorillas living in central Congo, while it originated from the cow bat of the family of leaf-nosed bats. In bats, Marburg can also occur due to the bite of other rodents or large insects.
