Brulamycin: description, use and side effects

Brulamycin, also known by its international name Tobramycin, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is used to treat various bacterial infections. The drug is produced in Hungary by Biogal Pharmaceutical Plant JSC and has several dosage forms: 40 mg injection solution, 80 mg injection solution and 0.3% eye drops.

Indications for the use of Brulamycin include severe bacterial infections such as septicemia in newborns, children and adults, lower respiratory tract infections, including cystic fibrosis, pleural empyema, meningitis, abdominal infections, including peritonitis, skin and bone infections, complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections. Eye drops are used for external infections of the eye and its appendages.

The drug contains the active substance Tobramycin, which can cause serious side effects. The most common of them is irreversible damage to the vestibular and auditory branches of the VIII pair of cranial nerves with partial or complete bilateral deafness, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, headache, disorientation, drowsiness, paresthesia, muscle fasciculations, convulsions, impaired renal function (oliguria, cylindruria, proteinuria, tubular disorders, increased levels of creatinine and urea nitrogen), anemia, leukopenia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, eosinophilia, nausea, diarrhea, increased activity of transaminases and LDH, bilirubin levels, hypocalcemia, hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia, fever , rash, itching, anaphylaxis. When used conjunctivally, local allergic reactions may occur in the form of itching and swelling of the eyelids.

There are contraindications to the use of Brulamycin, such as hypersensitivity, including to other aminoglycosides, myasthenia gravis, parkinsonism, chronic renal failure, dysfunction of the VIII pair of cranial nerves, dehydration, pregnancy and old age. In addition, Brulamycin may increase the neurotoxic and nephrotoxic risk when used concomitantly with other drugs such as amphotericin B and cyclosporine.
