Tibial Tuberosity

Tibial tuberosity (lat. tuberositas tibiae) - thickening of the bone at the attachment points of the muscle tendons.

On the tibia there are anterior, posterior and medial tuberosities.

The anterior tuberosity of the tibia (tuberositas tibiae anterior) is the site of attachment of the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle.

The posterior tuberosity of the tibia (tuberositas tibiae posterior) is the site of attachment of the tendon of the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles.

The medial tuberosity of the tibia (tuberositas tibiae medialis) is the site of attachment of the tendon of the vastus medialis muscle.

The tibial tuberosities play an important role in providing strong muscle anchorage and transmitting muscle forces to the bone. Pathological changes in the tuberosities can lead to disruption of biomechanics and pain.
