Comedon (Comedo, Pl. Comedones)

Comedon (from Latin comedo - eat, devour) is a horny plug in the excretory duct of the sebaceous gland.

There are two main types of comedones:

  1. An open comedon (whitehead) is a horny plug that partially protrudes above the surface of the skin.

  2. A closed comedon (blackhead) is a horny plug completely located in the duct of the sebaceous gland under the skin.

Comedones are one of the manifestations of acne (acne). Their appearance is associated with excess sebum production, hyperkeratosis and disruption of the process of natural rejection of dead cells from the surface of the skin.

Comedones are most often localized in the face, chest, and back. To remove them, special cosmetics are used, as well as procedures in beauty salons. If comedones are squeezed out incorrectly, inflammatory processes may develop.

Comedon (Comedo, Plural comedones) is a type of acne, which is a blockage of the sebaceous gland. Comedones are divided into open and closed.

Open comedones are black in color due to the oxidation of sebum and are called “blackheads.” They are formed when the contents of the sebaceous gland come to the surface of the skin.

Closed comedones are white because sebum remains under the skin without oxidizing. They are called "whiteheads". They are non-inflamed acne in which the opening of the sebaceous gland is blocked.

Comedones most often appear on the face, back, and chest. The causes of their occurrence may be hormonal changes, contaminated skin, stress and other factors. To treat comedones, special cleansers are used, as well as procedures in beauty salons.
