Esophageal atresia is a severe malformation in which the formation of a passable esophageal tube and its separation from the respiratory system are disrupted. There are several forms of atresia. The most common variant is the formation of a blind upper segment of the esophagus and a lower segment communicating with the trachea through a fistulous tract.

A newborn with esophageal atresia immediately after birth experiences attacks of cyanosis and apnea due to the accumulation of mucus, and when attempting to feed, respiratory failure and aspiration pneumonia. Diagnosis is based on radiography and endoscopy. Treatment is only surgical.

A congenital diaphragmatic hernia occurs due to a defect in the diaphragm through which abdominal organs move into the chest cavity. There are true and false hernias. Symptoms appear immediately
