Enucleation

Enucleation is a surgical operation during which the complete removal of an organ, tumor or cyst is performed. In ophthalmology, for example, enucleation involves the complete removal of the eyeball, while other structures located in the orbit (auxiliary organs of the eye, such as the eye muscles) remain intact.

Usually, to obtain a better cosmetic effect, a plastic ball is temporarily inserted into the eye socket instead of the removed eyeball. Enucleation may be required for eye diseases such as intraocular tumors, severe trauma, or inflammatory processes that cannot be treated conservatively.
