Epidermophyton (lat. Epidermophyton) is a genus of fungi (mushroom-like organisms) that cause skin diseases (mycoses). E. includes an imperfect fungus from the class of deuteromycetes (Deuteromycota) and includes about fifty species. Skin diseases in humans and animals are caused by only two species: E. floccosus and E. quinckeanum. E. can cause mycosis of the feet, forearms, hands, and in some cases large folds and groin; sometimes E. affects toenails; Erythrasma and pityriasis versicolor occur less frequently.
Athlete's hands, or nail fungus, is provoked by other types of fungus of the genus Epiderum
