First aid for a tibial joint injury: applying a soft splint When conducting a secondary examination, you suspect that the victim has a serious lower leg injury. You decide to apply a soft splint to ensure immobility of the injured limb. Apply a splint • Do not remove the victim's shoes or socks. • Apply three bandages: one under the foot and two under the shin. Gently fold or wrap a blanket or pillow around your shinbone. Secure the splint with bandages •Secure a blanket or pillow with two bands around the lower leg. • Tie a third bandage around the foot. • Check that the bandages are tied tightly, but not too tightly. • If more than one finger fits under the bandage, tighten it tighter.
