According to the World Health Organization (WHO), today there are about 345 million people in the world suffering from ring-type baldness. Only about 8% of them have disorders that are painless, while the rest suffer from severe discomfort, and in some patients their course is the cause of serious depressive conditions. The development of ring-shaped baldness is not influenced by heredity, gender, or race. As a rule, this occurs between the ages of 20 and 50; often a man begins to go bald by the age of 15; however, baldness in women also begins at about the same age. However, while there is an increase in cases of the disease among women and a decrease in the average age of onset, younger cases of alopecia areata are increasingly being reported among men.
