Heterotrophs are heterotrophic organisms that convert organic substances such as glucose and amino acids to produce energy. With heterotrophy, cells are not able to synthesize organic substances themselves and need to obtain them from the external environment. Basically, this property is usually characteristic of organisms of plant and animal origin. Molecules of organic substances serve as the main source of energy and the main building material for many organisms. Their synthesis requires other components that can provide an energy source, such as sunlight or the chemical compound ATP. When natural organic components are destroyed, and new ones are synthesized in their place, the chemical reactions that occur are the main source of energy for the heterotroph. Classification of heterotrophs According to the method of obtaining energy, several types of heterotrophs are distinguished:
