Meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Based on the nature of inflammation, serous and purulent meningitis are distinguished.

Causes of meningitis:

  1. An infection caused by viruses or bacteria. Most often, meningitis is caused by viruses of the enteroviral group, meningococci, and pneumococci.

  2. Head or back injury.

  3. Brain tumors.

  4. Some drugs and chemicals.

Symptoms of meningitis:

  1. Heat

  2. Strong headache

  3. Vomit

  4. Photophobia

  5. Neck muscle stiffness

  6. Loss of consciousness (in severe cases)

Diagnosis is based on analysis of cerebrospinal fluid taken during a lumbar puncture.

Treatment includes hospitalization, administration of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and painkillers. With timely treatment, the prognosis is favorable.

For prevention purposes, it is recommended to promptly treat infectious diseases, avoid head injuries, and also get vaccinated against meningococcus.
