Paratrachoma mainly affects women and children. There are two known methods of infection: airborne, through tracheal pathogens transmitted by coughing and sneezing; contact-household, when paratrachomic microbes are transmitted during the care of newborns. The culprit of paratrachoma is x bacteria - a microorganism that can reproduce only on the mucous membranes of the eye. Transmission from sick people to healthy people occurs only in the first weeks after infection; for patients with paratrachoma, the epidemic period is much longer.
