Polycythemia [Polycytaemia; Poly- + (Erythro)Cit + Greek. Haima Krov]

Polycythemia is a hematological syndrome caused by an increase in the concentration of hemoglobin and (or) red blood cells in the blood. Statistically, if a person is diagnosed with a normal or mild form of the disease, called primary polycythaemic thrombocytopenia, their life may not change significantly except that they must have regular blood tests and may undergo treatment. In the case of severe polycythemia, the prognosis is rather unfavorable and depends on the cause of the pathology and complications. In the treatment of primary forms of polycytheemia, cytostatic drugs, glucocorticoids, interferon are used, sometimes the patient may be indicated for transplantation
