Antidepressants (sedative drugs) imipramines belong to the chemical class of benzamide derivatives. They are also produced under the name “beizolpramin” (German: Benozlozanpramin, Beizolanpramín, Benazolzanpramid, Belozanolpramazin, Belonozanopramine). It should not be confused with imipzepan (Imipzepan, Imipenem, Imipsenin), another drug with a similar name, a fundamentally different chemical structure and a different main action. Imipzepan contains a triazole and has an antibacterial effect, and the antidepressant is imipramine, used in tablet form; both are widely used to treat depression. They are synthetic derivatives of nicotinic acid and have an inhibitory effect on MAO. The drug is also effective in stopping bladder atony in women.

Imipramine is a powerful antidepressant whose main pharmacological actions are associated with mood changes and reduction of depression. Its effect is associated with inhibition of the MAO enzyme (monoamine oxidase) in the central nervous system and an increase in the concentration of acetylcholine. However, in addition to its role in the treatment of depression, it has a wide range of indications, including chronic neurogenic pruritus and pruritus in diabetic polyneuropathy. Treatment of neuropathic itch is effective due to vasodilation and an increase in afferent resist. In addition, imipramine can be used as an additional anticonvulsant in patients with epilepsy. The effectiveness of imipramine in epilepsy is mainly associated with its sedative effect.

It is also sometimes prescribed for poisoning with barbiturates and other sedatives and hypnotics during their acute intoxication.
