Rib Sternal

The sternal rib is a unique anatomical element, representing one of 20 pairs of paired ribs. The rib is located between the eighth and ninth vertebrae of the sternum. The rib originates on the sternum or cartilaginous process. It passes through the internal opening of the fascia of the diaphragm and then attaches to the lateral sternum, the cartilaginous part of the first, second or third rib. Another feature of the sternal rib is that its spongy part is thinner than other ribs. Thanks to this feature, the costal arch bends as smoothly as possible at the junction between the seventh and eighth ribs, and the cartilaginous part of the rib is not subject to abrasion as a result of an impact from the inside, which is the reason for its failure during fractures.
