Rectal Scraping

Recommended nasty scrape

A rectal scraping is a simple and inexpensive procedure that can help identify the presence of worm eggs. It consists in the fact that the doctor takes a scraping from the surface of the cervix and sends it for testing in the laboratory.

How it's done?

The patient sits on the couch and bends his knees. The doctor inserts a small amount of petroleum jelly or water-based lubricant into the anus. He then uses a small instrument called a teat rod or spoon held in his hand with a short end to collect material for examination.

After collecting the material, the doctor removes the scraping rod and tip from the rectum and then wipes it with a paper towel. The clinical sample is inserted into a special plastic bag, which is then sent to the laboratory.

In the laboratory, the material is examined for the presence of worm eggs under a microscope. If they are detected, the patient has the right to further examination, for example through blood testing.

***Fortunately, this procedure is relatively painless. However, some patients may experience slight discomfort or even pain for a few minutes after the procedure.***
