Simvastol

Simvastol: a lipid-lowering drug for cholesterol control and cardiovascular disease prevention

Simvastol, also known by various synonyms such as Atherostat, Vasilip, Vero-Simvastatin, Zovatin and Zocor, is a lipid-lowering drug that is used to reduce cholesterol levels in the body and prevent cardiovascular diseases. It belongs to a class of inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that plays a key role in the synthesis of cholesterol in the body.

The country of origin of Simvastol is Romania, where it is produced by the companies Armedica and Gedeon Richter. The drug is widely used not only in the domestic market of Romania, but also in other countries.

Simvastol is available in the form of film-coated tablets with different dosages: 10 mg and 20 mg. The active substance of the drug is simvastatin.

The use of Simvastol is recommended for the following indications:

  1. Hypercholesterolemia (increased cholesterol levels in the blood) in the absence of effect from diet therapy.
  2. Combined hypercholesterolemia and triglyceridemia.
  3. Coronary heart disease (CHD).
  4. Prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke.
  5. Atherosclerosis.

However, there are some contraindications to the use of Simvastol. It is not recommended for hypersensitivity to the drug, acute liver dysfunction, severe renal failure, pregnancy, breastfeeding and children.

When using Simvastol, some side effects may occur, including dyspeptic symptoms, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, exacerbation of pancreatitis and hepatitis, increased levels of transaminases, disorders of the central nervous system (headache, paresthesia, convulsions), myalgia, asthenia, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, photosensitivity and allergic reactions.

Simvastol may interact with other medications. For example, it can enhance the effects of indirect anticoagulants and the hepatotoxicity of alcohol and some drugs that adversely affect the liver. Also, high doses of nicotinic acid and antifungal drugs - azole derivatives (ketoconazole, itraconazole) may increase the risk of developing myopathy when used simultaneously with Simvastol.
