The common tendon ring (annulus tendinous communis, pna, bna, jna; synonym: ring of Zinn) is a fibrous ring formed by the fusion of the tendons of the quadriceps femoris muscle. It covers the neck of the femur and serves as the attachment point for the thigh muscles.
The general tendon ring consists of tightly fused tendons of the following muscles:
- Long head of the biceps femoris muscle
- Short head of the biceps femoris muscle
- Rectus femoris
- Sartorial muscle
The ring covers the femoral neck, providing additional support and stability. This reduces the load on the hip joint capsule during hip movements.
Thus, the general tendon ring plays an important role in ensuring the strength of the hip joint. It is part of the auxiliary apparatus of this joint.
