Thigh muscle Vastus intermedius

The vastus intermedius muscle (lat. m. vastus intermedius) is one of the four heads of the quadriceps femoris muscle.

Located in the deep layer of the anterior thigh. Attaches to the anterior and lateral surface of the body of the femur.

The function of the muscle is to extend the leg at the knee joint and participate in straightening the extended leg from a bent position.

Innervation is provided by the femoral nerve (n. femoralis).

Blood supply occurs through the muscular branches of the deep femoral artery (a. profunda femoris) and the descending knee artery (a. genus descendens).
