Epithelial tissue

The epidermis is a layer of skin that performs a protective function and is multi-layered. There are two layers in it: horny and dermal.

The stratum corneum consists of keratinized cells that gradually die and slough off. This ensures renewal of the epidermis and protection from harmful influences.

The dermal layer contains many collagen, elastic and reticular fibers, which provide strength and elasticity to the skin. It also contains sebaceous glands and sweat glands, which secrete secretions to moisturize and protect the skin.

The epidermis is also involved in regulating body temperature and sweat production. When the external temperature rises or during physical activity, sweating increases, which cools the body.

Thus, the epidermis plays an important role in protecting the skin from external influences and maintaining homeostasis in the body.
