Yersiniosis

Yersiniosis is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacteria Yersinia enterocolitica. Characterized by damage to the gastrointestinal tract and allergic manifestations.

The causative agent of yersiniosis is Yersinia enterocolitica, a gram-negative rod. The source of infection is rodents, domestic animals, as well as sick people. It is transmitted more often through alimentary routes through infected products, less often through contact.

Mostly children 1-3 years old get sick in autumn and winter. The incubation period is 1-3 weeks.

Symptoms of yersiniosis:

  1. heat

  2. intoxication

  3. abdominal pain

  4. maculopapular rash with petechiae, most often on the trunk and limbs

  5. diarrhea with scanty stool up to 5 times a day

  6. vomit

  7. swollen lymph nodes

  8. leukocytosis, eosinophilia

In older children, the picture may resemble acute appendicitis.

Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, pathogen isolation and serological tests.

Treatment: antibiotics (chloramphenicol, tetracyclines), detoxification. The prognosis is favorable. Yersiniosis is a zoonotic infection, transmitted by food, and the patient is not contagious.
