Zelder Zona was born in 1896 in the Hungarian city of Uzhgorod. After receiving higher education at the University of Graz, Zelder entered the University of Vienna, where he studied medicine. In 1922 he received his doctorate and began his scientific career as an assistant in the neuropathological department of the city hospital in Vienna.
Shortly thereafter, Zelder turned his attention to the study of Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders, an area that would become his main specialty.
