Lemon

CitruslemonBurm.

In Ancient China and India, the medicinal properties of limung (lemon) were well known. In the East, lemon was used as an antidote for snake bites, as well as to prevent outbreaks of cholera and plague epidemics. Avicenna recommended it for sea fever.

It took many centuries for the fruits of the lemon tree to be appreciated by residents of Europe (11th century) and Russia (19th century). Lemon was used not only for medicinal but also for preventive purposes. In 1795, sailors in the English Navy were required to take 30 grams of lemon juice daily to prevent scurvy. During the circumnavigation of the world under the command of Admiral I.F. Krusenstern (1803-1806), none of the crew members of the ships Neva and Nadezhda fell ill with scurvy, because lemons were included in the daily diet of the sailors. High society beauties used lemon juice to get rid of freckles and whiten their skin.

Despite the fact that the fruits of the lemon tree have a very sour taste (containing from 5 to 8% citric acid), their regular intake neutralizes excess acid in the body.
