Aerosinusitis

Aerosinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses that occurs during sudden changes in barometric pressure of the surrounding air. Usually observed among pilots, experimenters in pressure chambers, and when working in caissons.

Causes

Aerosinusitis occurs due to obstruction of the outlet openings of the paranasal sinuses. This may be associated with diseases such as allergic rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, hypertrophic rhinitis. Most often, the frontal sinuses are involved in the process, less often - the maxillary sinuses.

Symptoms and course

The main symptoms of aerosinusitis:

  1. a feeling of heaviness, pressure and sharp pain in the affected sinus area;

  2. headache;

  3. nasal breathing disorder.

On an x-ray you can see darkening of the sinus and sometimes the level of fluid in it.

Treatment

Treatment of aerosinusitis should be aimed at restoring nasal breathing and patency of the excretory ducts of the paranasal sinuses.

Prevention

To prevent aerosinusitis, it is recommended to postpone flights, work in caissons and pressure chambers until nasal breathing is completely restored.

Aerosinusitis is an inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa. This pathology often develops under the influence of bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the upper respiratory tract or are already contained on the mucous membranes in a weakened state. Due to exposure to unfavorable factors, immunity decreases, which contributes to more active development of microorganisms. In adults, the disease develops faster than in children. The nasal passages are wider, so even a small infection can quickly spread further. Basically, aerosinusitis refers to infectious inflammation, which results in an increase in the level of leukocytes in the mucus. There are several forms of the disease: catarrhal, pus
