An antherozoid is a motile fertilizing cell in fungi. Antherozoids are formed in antheridia - the male genital organs of fungi. They have a flagellum, with the help of which they actively move in the aquatic environment to the female genital organs - oogonia. When the antherozoid comes into contact with the egg in the oogony, their protoplasts merge and fertilization occurs.
Thus, antherozoids perform an important function in delivering male germ cells for fertilization in sexually reproducing fungi. Their mobility and ability for chemotaxis towards oogonia ensure the successful completion of the sexual process.
