Migraine epilepsy is a rare form of epilepsy in which epileptic seizures alternate with or are combined with migraine attacks.
Main features:
- Epileptic seizures of various types (tonic, clonic, absence seizures, etc.)
- Migraine attacks with characteristic headache, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound
- Alternation or combination of epileptic and migraine attacks
The causes of migraine epilepsy are not completely clear. It is assumed that genetic predisposition, cerebral circulatory disorders, and biochemical factors play a role in its development.
Diagnosis is based on a thorough history, EEG, and MRI/CT of the brain. Treatment includes antiepileptic and antimigraine drugs.
Migraine epilepsy is rare, more often in women. Correct diagnosis and selected therapy make it possible to achieve control over attacks.
