Exenteration of the Orbit

Exenteration of the eye or orbit is an operation in which all tissues of the eye (eyeball, membranes and tissues), excluding the skin, are removed through an incision in the facial cavity. This may be necessary to treat a malignant tumor that has invaded the orbital space and is blocking the eyes. In addition, orbital exenteration can be used for non-cancerous conditions such as gigantism or myopia, which require radical changes in the shape of the eye to help a person see better. This operation is very difficult and risky.
