Often people with diabetes know what is happening to them and ask for something containing sugar. Some may carry sugar-containing medications with them in case of such conditions. If the victim is able to eat or drink, give him something sweet. In most cases, candy, fruit juice and soft drinks are effective because they contain enough sugar. Regular table sugar, pieces or dissolved in a glass of water, can also help. If the victim's condition does not improve within a few minutes after taking sugar, call an ambulance. If the victim's problem is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), the sugar you give will work fairly quickly. If a person has very high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), adding more sugar over a short period of time will not cause much harm. As always, follow basic first aid principles. If the victim is unconscious, do not try to give him anything to drink or eat. Monitor the victim for signs of life, maintain a normal body temperature and call an ambulance.
