Homeostasis

Homeostasis (from ancient Greek ὁμοιοστασία - “sameness in condition” and στάσις - “standing, immobility”) is the body’s ability to maintain a constant internal environment, despite changes in external conditions. It is one of the basic principles of physiology and biochemistry, which explains how living organisms adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Homeostasis includes many processes and mechanisms that allow the body to maintain its integrity and function normally. One of the key aspects of homeostasis is the regulation of body temperature, which occurs due to the work of the hypothalamus and the thermoregulation center. Another important mechanism is the regulation of acid-base balance, which is maintained through the work of the kidneys and lungs.

In addition, homeostasis also includes regulation of metabolism, homeostasis of the immune system, and homeostasis of the nervous system. All of these processes work together to maintain a constant internal environment of the body and ensure its survival and functioning.

However, if homeostasis is disturbed, it can lead to various diseases and pathologies. For example, an imbalance in acid-base balance can lead to acidosis or alkalosis, and a disorder in the immune system can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases.

Thus, homeostasis is an important mechanism that allows the body to maintain its constancy and function normally in changing environmental conditions.
