Liver cells

Liver parenchyma cells, or hepatocytes, are one of the most abundant cell types in the body. They play an important role in the metabolism and neutralization of toxins that come from the gastrointestinal tract. Hepatocytes also participate in the synthesis of bile, which is secreted into the gallbladder, preparing it for transport to the intestine.

Liver cells have a variety of morphologies, sizes and shapes. Hepatocyte shapes range from round and oval to dome-shaped and barrel-shaped. Cell size can also vary, with the larger the hepatocyte, the larger the metabolic area. Hepatocytes contain mitochondria
