Intrinsic hair cells are specialized cells that are found within the hair follicle (hair root). These cells are involved in the formation and regulation of hair growth. Hair follicles are derived from the epidermis and are located in the scalp and sometimes on the skin of other parts of the body (for example, eyebrows and eyelashes). Healthy hair follicles contain a bulb cell located in the subcutaneous region of the hair shaft. The bulb formed inside the follicle is a covering membrane called the hair matrix, consisting of keratin and serving as the basis for hair growth.
