Polychromatophilic megalocytes (MPC) are rare blood cells in humans and some animals that can be observed in the diagnosis of diseases. The cells may be red, deep pink or purple depending on the content of hemoglobin and other blood components such as copper, iron, manganese, etc.
Many scientists believe that MPCs are the precursors of macrocytes, red blood cells (erythrocytes), which carry a large load of oxygen to all tissues of the body. The conversion of megalocytes to macrocytes occurs very slowly, making it a very rare event. Many specialists, having noticed this type of cells in a blood smear, prefer to undergo an appropriate examination to find out the reasons for their appearance.
