Potassium Permanganate

Potassium permanganate has a local cauterizing, resorptive hematotoxic (methemoglobinemia) effect. If ingested, a sharp pain appears in the oral cavity, along the esophagus, in the abdomen, vomiting, and diarrhea. The mucous membrane of the mouth and pharynx is swollen, dark brown, purple.

Possible swelling of the larynx and mechanical asphyxia, burn shock, motor agitation, and convulsions. Severe pneumonia, hemorrhagic colitis, nephropathy, and parkinsonism are often observed. When the acidity of gastric juice decreases, methemoglobinemia with severe cyanosis and shortness of breath is possible.

The lethal dose is about 1 g.

  2. For severe cyanosis (methemoglobinemia) - methylene blue intravenously (50 ml of 1% solution), ascorbic acid (30 ml of 5% solution) intravenously.
  3. Cyanocobalamin up to 1000 mcg, pyridoxine (3 ml of 5% solution) intramuscularly.
  4. Treatment of toxic nephropathy, hepatopathy.
