Sedimentation

Sedimentation (from Latin sedimentum - settling, from Latin sedeo - sitting) is the mechanical deposition of solid particles under the influence of gravity or centrifugal forces in the thickness of water, liquid or gaseous medium.

Sedimentation is one of the main processes occurring in nature and in technological processes. For example, sedimentation is used for wastewater treatment, as well as for the separation of solid particles in various industries.

In nature, sedimentation is the process of settling of small particles to the bottom of reservoirs, accumulation of precipitation in the atmosphere, as well as precipitation in the form of rain, snow or hail.

The sedimentation process can be observed during the operation of various filters, for example, during the process of filtering water through sand or other materials.

The rate of sedimentation depends on the size of the particles and the density of the medium in which they are located. The higher the density of the medium and the smaller the particle size, the faster sedimentation occurs.
