Vernix caseosa is a secretion that is secreted by the baby's skin in the womb. Due to this skin secretion, a protective barrier is created on the baby’s skin that prevents the penetration of infection, its protective function lasts until birth and until the baby switches to oral feeding (during the first 3 months). In a healthy child it is transparent or white. It is formed by mixing the horny and shiny layers of the epidermis of the skin. If the color is white, then this process occurs without problems in a newborn. The stratum corneum is secreted by the skin of the fetus gradually, as a result of which an opaque layer is formed, only when the protective layer is 2 mm does the transparent part of the formed layer appear.
