Urinary Retention (More Accurate Name: Urinary Retention)

Urinary retention is the inability to empty the bladder on your own. It can be acute and chronic, complete and partial. It occurs as a result of compression of the urinary tract (adenoma or prostate cancer, cicatricial stricture of the urethra, prostatitis) with a decrease in the contractility of the muscular wall of the bladder.

In case of prostate adenoma of the I-II degree, acute urinary retention is facilitated by hyperemia of the pelvic organs, less often - by the prescription of diuretics. This leads to overdistension of the bladder and loss of detrusor function. In young men, acute untreated prostatitis often causes dysuria and can lead to acute retention.

Diagnosis is based on medical history, palpation of the abdomen, percussion, and catheterization. In children, the causes may be stones, phimosis, cystitis. In women - tumors, scars.

Acute delay is manifested by sharp pain in the abdomen, urges and the inability to empty a full bladder. Chronic - gradual increase in residual urine.

Treatment is catheterization, if impossible - epicystostomy. In chronic cases, treatment of the underlying disease. Catheterization complications are possible. The prognosis depends on the cause of the delay.
