Aerophagia

Aerophagia is the swallowing of air in excess of the amount usually supplied with food.

Causes of aerophagia:

  1. Fast food
  2. Conversations while eating
  3. Excessive consumption of carbonated drinks (sparkling water, beer, etc.)

Symptoms of aerophagia:

  1. Feeling of heaviness and fullness in the epigastric region
  2. Belching air
  3. With chronic aerophagia, belching can occur regardless of food intake, including at night
  4. Pain in the heart area
  5. Attacks of suffocation

Recommendations for aerophagia:

  1. Eating in small portions and slowly
  2. Eliminating carbonated drinks from your diet
  3. Don't talk while eating
  4. If aerophagia persists, consult a doctor, as the cause may be a respiratory or digestive disease.

In children, aerophagia often occurs due to imperfect functions of the digestive system, as well as when sucking on an empty or insufficiently filled breast. This can lead to eating disorders. Signs of aerophagia in a child: crying during feeding, bloating, regurgitation and vomiting after eating. Consultation with a pediatrician is required.
