Hemizygosity

Hemizygosity is a condition in which an organism has one half of the genetic material, but not the other. As a result, the body may be at risk of developing diseases and health problems associated with mutations in this genetic material. Hemizygousness is a common problem in a person who has two parents who are both hemizygous. An example of this would be a woman (carrier) who uses artificial insemination with her partner's sperm to conceive.

Why is heredity so important, especially in the matter of conception? This is because each parent passes on half of the genetic material to their children -

Hemizygosity is the stage of sexual reproduction in eukaryotes when two homologous germ cells, zygotes, fuse as a result of fertilization, but one cell with two homologous sets of chromosomes appears. During cytokinesis during meiosis, one sperm is formed with a haploid set of chromosomes and a second one, also with haploids. All subsequent cell divisions will occur with only half the chromosomes from the first bag and half the chromosomes from the second.
