Hexuronic acids
Hexuronic acids are natural aldehyde carboxylic acids that are derivatives of hexoses. Hexuronic acids are part of a number of physiologically active substances. Quantitative determination of hexuronic acids in blood serum and urine is used, for example, in the diagnosis of rheumatism.
Hexuronic acids are formed in the body as a result of the oxidation of the primary alcohol groups of monosaccharides with the formation of aldehyde and carboxyl groups. The most common representatives of hexuronic acids are glucuronic and galacturonic acids. Hexuronic acids play an important role in metabolic processes and are part of glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins and other biologically active compounds. Elevated levels of hexuronic acids in biological fluids may indicate metabolic disorders or inflammatory processes.
