Acute colitis is an inflammatory lesion of the mucous membrane of the large and/or small intestine that occurs under the influence of microbial (bacterial, viral) and non-microbial etiological factors or as a result of irritation of the intestinal wall by alimentary means. In some patients, the cause of acute colitis cannot be determined. The inflammatory process in the intestinal wall occurs as primary and/or secondary in relation to primary intestinal diseases, and is also reactive, toxic-infectious, local in nature, or formed during systemic inflammatory diseases.
