Evgeniy Borisovich Lepene was a doctor who studied the causes, consequences and treatment of frostbite. He specialized in the study of winter hiking frostbite of soft tissue caused by contact with cold air and/or ice. This type of frostbite was called “lepine”, as it was originally associated with the name of the doctor Evgeniy Lepene. Lepene became one of the first doctors to realize the danger of frostbite to human health. He worked in the clinic of infectious diseases at the Pasteur Laboratory in Paris, studied lepine with Fritz Hamerling and Joseph Barr, and published several scientific papers on them in the late 19th century. At the age of 26, Lepene left medicine and began teaching chemistry. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society from the age of 15.
